Search engine optimization
What is an optimized web page?
An optimized webpage is one
which will appear close to the top of the search
engine results for a particular search phrase.
It is said to be optimized for that particular
search term, or keyword. Sometimes this happens
by chance, but increasingly it occurs because
the webmaster has specifically optimized the
page for the keyword. Frequently a page is
created for the sole purpose of attracting
people who search for that particular keyword.
How do I optimize a web page?
There are certain places on the
webpage where the keyword should appear if the
page is to rank well. I have listed them here
roughly in order of importance as I perceive it.
Page title is probably the most
important. The title of a page, like that of a
book, should define what the page is all about,
so a search engine should consider it very
important. But because a page can have only one
title, this means that a page can only be
optimized for a few words. Thus, a website that
has many keywords that are important to it is
going to need many pages, each optimized for
just a few of those keywords.
There are also off-page factors that may help to
optimize a page. They are link popularity and
the anchor-text of links.
Plenty has already been written
about optimization, so I will refer you to the
links below for more information.
